About City

Cologne is Germany's fourth-largest city, and is the largest city both in the German Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia and within the Rhine-Ruhr Metropolitan Area, one of the major European metropolitan areas with more than ten million inhabitants. Cologne is located on both sides of the Rhine River, less than eighty kilometers from Belgium. The city's famous Cologne Cathedral is the seat of the Catholic Archbishop of Cologne. Cologne is a major cultural center for the Rhineland; it is home to more than thirty museums and hundreds of galleries. Exhibitions range from local ancient Roman archaeological sites to contemporary graphics and sculpture. The Cologne Trade Fairhosts a number of trade shows such as Art Cologne, imm Cologne, Gamescom, and the Photokina.

Cologne is well known for its beer, called Kölsch. The famous Roman-Germanic Museum of Cologne features art and architecture from the city's distant past; the Museum Ludwig houses one of the most important collections of modern art in Europe, including a Picasso collection matched only by the museums in Barcelona and Paris. The Museum Schnütgen of religious art is partly housed in St. Cecilia, one of Cologne's Twelve Romanesque churches. Cologne is also famous for Eau de Cologne, a perfume created by Italian expatriate Johann Maria Farina at the beginning of the 18th century.
